Qatar Charity completes QR31mn fishing support project in Gaza

Qatar Charity’s (QC) office in the Gaza Strip celebrated the completion of the Emergency Support Project for the Fisheries Sector. This project comes within the framework of the Programme for the Promotion and Protection of Food Security in Palestine, in cooperation with the Palestinian Ministry of Agriculture, at a cost of more than QR31mn, with funding from the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Speaking at the ceremony attended by attended by government officials, Mohamed Abu Haloub, director of Qatar Charity’s office in the Gaza Strip, expressed his pleasure over the completion of the project, which has been under implementation for about eight years.

Abu Halub said: "The project is very important for the fishing sector, as it is suitable for relief and development interventions”, emphasizing the continued commitment of Qatar Charity towards supporting the Palestinian people and meeting their humanitarian and developmental needs.

He noted that the fishing project was one of the significant projects implemented by Qatar Charity during the past ten years, in addition to several other programmes and projects carried out in several fields, including social welfare and orphans' sponsorships, housing for the poor, education, health, agriculture, relief, emergency and others.

Abu Haloub extended thanks and appreciation to the benefactors in Qatar and all those who contributed to the success of this project.

Components of the Project

The project, which benefited more than 5,000 fishermen, managed to build four fish hatcheries with a capacity of 130 cubic meters, with the aim of fattening fishes for hatching.

The project also created an integrated observation unit for aquaculture and agriculture to train university students and farmers to utilize modern integrated farming techniques, in addition to covering the establishment to maintain the appropriate temperature for growth throughout the year.

The project also included the construction of fishermen's rooms in the Gaza port, in addition to providing them with fishing nets and relevant supplies.

Also, a project was carried out to rehabilitate and maintain the structures and engines of boats and sea vessels. Some 130 motors were distributed to fishermen in the Gaza Strip to help them pull up their fishing nets.

Research & Experiments

Adel Attallah, director general of  the Animal Wealth at the Ministry of Agriculture, said this project was one of the qualitative projects implemented by Qatar Charity, which would contribute to the provision of various services to the fisheries sector in the Gaza Strip, applauding the efforts made by Qatar Charity to serve this sector.

He also noted that this project would help meet the needs of fishers in the Gaza Strip for fingerlings, pointing out that it helped in conducting scientific research and experiments

Challenges

Nizar Ayyash, head of the Fishermen Union, expressed his thanks and gratitude to the benefactors in Qatar for their efforts and support for the Palestinian people in various sectors, especially agriculture and fishing.

Ayash noted that the project has strengthened the presence of fishermen in the face of the current challenges faced by them, pointing out that their economic conditions require many development projects to be implemented for them in Gaza.

Mohammed Hamada, the son of a fisherman who benefited from the project, expressed his happiness, saying "I extend my thanks and gratitude to the officials at the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Qatar Charity and their staff in the Gaza Strip for their social, economic and moral support. It has contributed to the improvement of our living conditions, especially as the project came under difficult living conditions because of the blockade. "
