Qatar Charity’s pact with OCHA to benefit children and women in Syria

Qatar Charity (QC) has signed a cooperation and partnership agreement with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Turkey, to deliver nutrition services to 24,000 children under the age of 5 and 11,360 pregnant and breastfeeding women in Aleppo’s rural areas where these internally displaced persons suffer from severe malnutrition.

The project, which is valued at QR 900,000 provided by OCHA, will be implemented, monitored, and periodically followed up by Qatar Charity’s regional office and its field teams in Turkey. The implementation of the project commenced at the beginning of July 2020 will continues until the end of June 2021.

The project aims to integrate the work of the nutrition, health and personal hygiene sectors to deliver integrated services to beneficiaries. Qatar charity will provide much-needed and life-saving nutrition services to the children and women through five rapid response teams, which provide check-up, follow-up, and treatment for severe acute malnutrition and moderate acute malnutrition cases, in addition to giving advice to care providers. The teams also monitor malnutrition cases among children and women, and refer severe cases to treatment centers.

Dr. Ahmed Al-Abdullah, an official at the Nutrition Department of the Turkey office, said that Qatar Charity gives priority to Health and Nutrition Projects. He added that it has implemented several such projects during 2018 and 2019 in northern Syria with the support of 11 rapid response teams, in addition to distributing nutritional supplements to the children and women, and organizing awareness campaigns for health care providers.

Previously, Qatar Charity has inked many pacts with UN agencies. Recently, it has signed an agreement with OCHA to fight the COVID19 in northern Syria. Besides, it has signed many memorandums of understanding with UNICEF to provide nutrition teams with food supplements and peanut butters to be distributed during field visits.
