In a two-day field visit to Mauritania, His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Nasser bin Jassim Al Thani, QC's Head of the board of Directors; and Mr. Youssef bin Ahmed Al Kuwairi, QC's CEO, handed the keys of more than 100 houses to the Mauritanian families benefiting from the 'Social Housing' project.

The beneficiaries who received the keys of the houses were from Nouakchott and R'Kiz District, in Trarza Region 200 km from the capital. The delegation was accompanied by His Excellency Mr. Abdul Rahman Ali Al Kabisi, the Qatari Ambassador of Mauritania; and Mr. Idris As-Sahil, QC's Office Director in Mauritania. The residents and, most importantly, the benefiting families were in the reception of the delegation.

A Huge Project

The project is to build 235 housing units for certain chosen Mauritanian families. So far, 110 houses have been implemented (i.e. 50% of the work is completed). The benefiting families were chosen based on the level of their poverty. Each housing unit comprises 2 rooms, a toilet and a kitchen. The houses were built using reinforced concrete and had high quality doors and windows. The total cost of the project implementation was 10,079,000 QR.

A ceremony was held so as to celebrate handing the keys of the new houses to the beneficiaries. During the event, Sheikh Hamad bin Nasser bin Jassim Al Thani said, "This project is part of our humanitarian duty towards the Mauritanian people who are like family to us. The Qatari philanthropists believe that their donations are part of their duty towards their brothers and sisters. They do not want to be thanked. They just wish Mauritania more development and prosperity."

Field Visit

This project is considered the first of its kind. Delivering the keys of the houses to their new owners was one of its stages. During the field visit, his Excellency Sheikh Hamad reviewed the work progress of QC’s projects there. He also reviewed a summary of the projects that are expected to be implemented through the annual plan for 2016.

In addition, QC’s officials held a meeting while being in Nouakchott. They reviewed QC’s accomplishments in Mauritania. The total cost of projects in 2015 was 25,079,000 QR. The delegation also reviewed QC’s future plans for the country in the fields of education, health, orphans sponsorship, economic empowerment and poverty.

Plans and Projects

Since its first establishment in Mauritania, QC has implemented hundreds of projects from which so many people benefited; 2,400 orphans and poor families benefited from its sponsorship program. The total cost of the implemented projects was 25,079,000 QR. 10,000,000 QR were spent on providing 235 dignified houses for poor families; more than 1,000,000 QR were spent on 305 economic projects; more than 2,100,000 were spent on 4 centers that offer multiple services; and 2,400,000 QR were spent on the establishment of 13 mosques.

Earlier Visit

During the visit, QC's delegation met with 700 of the orphans QC sponsors there and their mothers. The families held a welcoming ceremony for the delegation. It was attended by the Qatari Ambassador of Mauritania; they expressed their gratitude for what Qatar, QC, and the Qatari philanthropists offered to these orphans in particular, and the Mauritanian people in general.

Qatar Charity (QC) has distributed winter relief items and food aid to more than 1500 needy persons in Kosovo, at a total cost of more than 500 thousand riyals.

The distribution of aid was carried out within the framework of the QC’s “Affected By Winter” campaign, in cooperation with four municipalities of the country, where the temperature dropped to 18 degrees below zero.

Mahmoud Abbas, Director of the QC Office in Kosovo said that the charity has distributed winter relief items and food baskets to needy families as an urgent response to lessen the suffering of those affected by the low temperatures in the Balkans.

He added that each family received a quantity of wood for heating and winter clothes, which include 2 jackets, 2 slacks, 2 shirts, shoes, a pullover and a coverlet, in addition to a food basket containing oil, flour, sugar, beans, rice, macaroni, tea and packets of spices.

Bashkim Krasniqi, Deputy Minister of Public Service of Kosovo expressed his deep gratitude and thanks for this assistance and Qatar Charity's outstanding efforts in the fields of development, relief and assistance to support the needy and orphans and to achieve tangible impact in the lives of beneficiary families, hoping Qatar Charity to continue its charitable journey in Kosovo.

For his part, Faruk Mujka, Deputy Mayor of Mitrovica, expressed his great pleasure in the participation with Qatar Charity to distribute this aid to poor families who are in dire need of such assistance. He hoped that other charities would follow the QC’s ways in coordination and cooperation with the responsible authorities in the country.

The beneficiaries of the winter relief expressed their happiness in getting this aid, wishing that such generous efforts would continue to benefit as many needy families as possible.

Expressing his joy and thanks to Qatar Charity, Sadri Faratti said “we are still in your memory, as you brought this aid to us in an area located on the mountain during this bitter cold”. Also, Hamida Babai thanked the QC’s humanitarian efforts with the same emotional way, saying “we cannot deny the support of Qatar for us”.

The projects in Kosovo cover different segments of the community and diverse areas of QC’s work, most notably: sponsoring orphans, people with special needs and poor families, as the number reached than 2,200 sponsored persons.

It is worth noting that more than 4000 people benefited from education and training courses organized through its Qatar Training Center. Over 315 Income-Generating Projects have been implemented, while the number of water and sanitation projects has risen up to 400, in addition to 20 construction projects, which involve houses and mosques.

Qatar Charity (QC), through four central kitchens, continuously prepares 2,600 complete Iftar meals daily to distributes them to needy families or provide them to its Ramadan tables organized for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in various areas and camps in northern Syria and Daraa.

Faisal al-Fuhaida, executive director of the Charity’s operations department, said the Ramadan projects have been provided to the Displaced and Needy People in Syria in response to their urgent need for assistance and food, especially in this holy month, as well as to cover the great shortage of food.

As Qatar Charity is keen to provide Iftar meals to the largest number of the affected people inside the Syrian, it has set up 4 Ramadan field kitchens at the beginning of the holy month to prepare fresh Iftar meals, including rice, meat, chicken and yogurt.

The kitchens have been set up in various areas of northern Syria such as Idlib and Aleppo in addition to Daraa and is expected to benefit 8,000 fasting persons during the holy month of Ramadan.

Al-Fuhaida thanked the philanthropists in Qatar for their continuous support to affected Syrians, especially in the holy month of Ramadan.

He added that work is underway to distribute food baskets to hundreds of affected families and internally displaced persons in a number of provinces and areas inside Syria at a cost of QR3mn in order to secure their food needs in the month of Ramadan, and is expected to be distributed soon.

He pointed out that a “Feed a Fasting” project was implemented in Turkey in coordination with official bodies and local partners. The project benefited 40,000 people.
