Qatar Charity: Education key to development and better future

Hundreds of millions of children are out of school worldwide, and hundreds of millions of children and adolescents cannot read and write. Besides, there are disturbing figures released by the United Nations on the International Day of Education, which is held on January 24 annually.

As Qatar Charity (QC) believes in the effective role of education in improving the lives of peoples and eliminating ignorance and illiteracy, it attaches great importance to educational and cultural projects, which are implemented in different countries across the globe. Qatar Charity’s projects for the education sector includes developmental and relief projects.

Right to Education

Qatar Charity has implemented more than 900 projects worldwide in the field of education in 2020, benefiting 177,000 students. It has launched hundreds of educational projects to provide equal educational opportunities for all, build new educational facilities and restore the damaged ones. Qatar Charity also works on enhancing awareness of the importance of the right of the underprivileged to education, in addition to supporting and training teachers and improving their standards of living.

Supporting Education in Qatar

As Qatar Charity is eager to contribute to the realization of Qatar National Vision 2030 in social, economic and cultural aspects, it has extended support educational support to orphans and children from low-income families within the framework of the “Charity Starts at Home” initiative. The assistance covered many expenses such as tuition fees, uniforms, school bags, and transportation costs, and others, benefiting thousands of students in 2020.

Qatar Charity has allowed companies and various entities within the country to support students within the framework of their social responsibility.

As part of its “Teach Me” initiative, Qatar Charity distributed school uniforms to orphaned students at the beginning of the academic year, benefiting hundreds of students.

Education for All

Qatar Charity has established several multi-service centers in many countries like Sudan, Somalia and Bangladesh. These centers have schools along with all educational facilities.

Recently, Qatar Charity opened a multi-service center in Kyrgyzstan. The center targets more than 18,000 people from the families of orphans and residents of the surrounding area. It comprises a school.

Qatar Charity also sponsors 4,032 students, and 2,919 teachers to provide all the favorable conditions for them.

Education in Crisis-Hit areas

Qatar Charity works in the field of education in more than 30 countries in Africa, Asia and Europe, focusing on the crisis-hit areas where Qatar Charity works on the protection of education due to the challenging situations there.

Qatar Charity works on establishing, furnishing, and repairing educational institutions, providing school bags, textbooks, and tuition fees, and offering e-learning services to ensure quality education for all.

The total beneficiaries of Qatar Charity's educational projects meant for Syrian displaced persons and refugees have reached more than 1.2 million children over the last five years.

Qatar Charity has provided caravans equipped with school benches, air conditioners, writing boards, heaters, fire extinguishers, and first aid kits, befitting 2,500 children directly.

Textbooks

Qatar Charity, with the support of the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD), has printed textbooks for primary, preparatory, and secondary school students in northern Syria. These textbooks were distributed free of charge to all students in northern Syria, who are estimated at nearly half a million.

In response to the growing demand for textbooks, Qatar Charity has printed and distributed 4,123,308 textbooks during the 2020-2021 academic year. At the end of 2020, the distribution of the textbooks took place in Idlib Governorate and the western Aleppo countryside in northwestern Syria.

The textbooks will meet 100% of the general requirements for the textbook in these areas, which are going through a high rate of displacement.

International partnerships

Qatar Charity has joined several international initiatives to serve education during crises, especially the QUEST initiative sponsored by the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD).  

It is a Qatari initiative that seeks to provide education and training to nearly 400 thousand Syrians within Syria and in Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq and Turkey. The total amount of the initiative exceeds USD 100 million.

World Refugee School

Qatar Charity also contributed to the World Refugee School initiative as a founding member of its global board of directors, aiming at providing quality education to refugees and displaced persons all over the world.

To protect education in crisis-hit areas, Qatar Charity has inked several agreements with international organizations, including an agreement with UNICEF in Somalia on building and rehabilitating 10 schools, meeting the requirements of 60 schools, and training teachers.
