Qatar Charity Continues to Empower Mauritanian Women Economically

8/5/2025

As part of its ongoing efforts to support women's economic empowerment, Qatar Charity, in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Affairs, Childhood and Family in Mauritania, has launched a new development initiative. The project involved the distribution of 150 sewing machines to graduates of the Women’s Empowerment Training Center, during a ceremony held in the capital city of Nouakchott.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Her Excellency Safia bint Intaha, Minister of Social Affairs, Childhood and Family, His Excellency Qatari Ambassador Shaheen Al-Kaabi, along with several government officials and representatives of civil society organizations.

The initiative aims to enable women and girls to enter the labor market through 15 women-led cooperatives spread across the southern and northern districts of Nouakchott. Beneficiaries will receive sewing machines, workshop access, fabrics, and supporting materials, ensuring a sustainable production environment under the supervision of the relevant ministry.

Stability and Development

Engineer Omar Abdulaziz, Director of Qatar Charity’s office in Mauritania, emphasized that the project aligns with the organization’s strategic vision, which places women’s empowerment at the forefront. “Women are the cornerstone of community building, and their economic independence positively impacts family stability and overall societal development,” he stated. He added that the initiative goes beyond equipment provision, offering technical support and ongoing training to ensure the sustainability of the program and tangible improvements in the lives of beneficiaries.

A Symbol of Brotherhood

Qatari Ambassador Mr. Shaheen Al-Kaabi expressed pride in the initiative, highlighting its reflection of the deep fraternal ties between Qatar and Mauritania. He noted that the project embodies the shared vision of His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and His Excellency President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani in promoting sustainable development. “This project is not merely technical support—it is an investment in the potential of Mauritanian women and a step toward building a more stable and dignified future for their families,” he said.

A Model Partnership

Minister Safia bint Intaha praised the initiative, expressing gratitude to the State of Qatar and Qatar Charity for their qualitative support that enhances the capabilities of women and girls in the country. She affirmed that “this partnership represents a successful model of cooperation between governments and humanitarian organizations and will directly contribute to improving self-employment opportunities and raising the living standards of Mauritanian families.”

It is worth noting that this project is part of a series of development initiatives implemented by Qatar Charity in Mauritania, in collaboration with local partners and with support from the State of Qatar, aiming to achieve inclusive and sustainable development for vulnerable communities
