Qatar Charity (QC) has laid the foundation stone for a new school building in the Kalutara district of Sri Lanka, aiming to serve approximately 2,000 male and female students at Muslim Central College in the district. The initiative is supported by philanthropists in Qatar and was launched in the presence of prominent government and community figures, as well as parents of the students.
The project includes the construction of a three-story building over an area of 9,000 square feet. It will be equipped and furnished with four modern science laboratories, four classrooms, and administrative and service facilities. The project is scheduled for completion within one year.
In his speech during the ceremony, Mr. Mahmoud Abu Khalifa, Director of Qatar Charity’s office in Sri Lanka, emphasized that the project aligns with Qatar Charity’s vision to provide an attractive educational environment that contributes to improving academic performance and promoting holistic development. He also expressed his gratitude to the benefactors in Qatar for their continued support of humanitarian and development efforts around the world.
For his part, Ali Sabry, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Finance, and Justice, expressed his pride in taking part in this achievement. He commended Qatar Charity’s efforts in supporting the education sector, which he described as a fundamental pillar in the advancement of society in Sri Lanka.
Ms. Inoka Weerasinghe, Deputy Director of Education, expressed deep appreciation for Qatar Charity’s initiatives, affirming that the new laboratories will be unique in the district and will have a significant impact on enhancing science education and providing opportunities for educational growth in surrounding communities.
In a touching moment, student Rihana Abdul Samad spoke on behalf of her classmates, saying: “Science without hands-on experiments is like a body without a soul. These laboratories will offer us an interactive and immersive learning experience, helping us acquire the skills and knowledge needed to pursue our professional careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).”
It is worth noting that this project is part of a series of development initiatives implemented by Qatar Charity in Sri Lanka. These include the construction of schools, health centers, water wells, and homes for underprivileged families—all in alignment with the Sri Lankan government's strategic plan across various sectors.
