Qatar Charity (QC) has taken a major step toward promoting sustainable development and alleviating poverty in Sri Lanka through a series of relief and development projects. These initiatives were carried out in coordination with the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils, and Local Government, in collaboration with the Secretariat for Non-Governmental Organizations. Thousands of families, including orphans sponsored by Qatar Charity, have benefited from these efforts.

The assistance aims to improve living standards, increase household incomes, support displaced families, and empower vulnerable communities through sustainable solutions. It also seeks to strengthen education and healthcare services, ensuring long-term impact on the lives of beneficiaries.

Qatar Charity distributed 14 essential items totaling approximately 20,600 units, benefiting nearly 60,000 individuals. In the healthcare sector, 600 manual wheelchairs were provided to public hospitals, along with 100 electric wheelchairs for persons with special needs and 1,062 blood pressure monitors to assist patients and medical facilities. In education, three government schools were equipped with around 1,000 desks and chairs to create a better learning environment for students.

To promote economic empowerment, Qatar Charity supplied 100 spice and flour machines and 200 sewing machines to help families launch small businesses and generate income.

In addition, the organization distributed 900 kitchen kits, 2,900 personal water purification systems, and 300 household water purification systems. Families also received 3,800 children’s hooded blankets, 2,500 women’s jackets, and 5,000 fleece blankets to provide comfort during colder months.

Further support included 900 USB solar lights and 1,300 portable camping heaters for displaced families and those living in cold mountainous regions.

The aid was distributed across Colombo, Gampaha, Anuradhapura, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Trincomalee, Batticaloa, and Ampara, with special allocations for Qatar Charity-sponsored orphans.

Mr. Mahmoud Abu Khalifa, Country Director of Qatar Charity’s Sri Lanka Branch, emphasized the importance of these efforts, stating: “This initiative aims to promote economic empowerment, reduce poverty and unemployment, and support displaced families. It reflects Qatar Charity’s mission to uphold human dignity and spread hope worldwide.”

A.G. Nishantha, Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration and Provincial Councils, praised Qatar Charity’s vital role in supporting Sri Lankan communities and ensuring transparent aid distribution.

Beneficiaries expressed heartfelt gratitude for the assistance. S.M. Najeema from Batticaloa said: “The sewing machine I received is not just a gift—it’s a future. I can now earn an income from home and support my children’s education.” Similarly, Mrs. Rupasinghe shared: “The flour mill will help us process our harvest locally, saving money and creating opportunities for small community business.”

Qatar Charity continues to implement diverse projects in Sri Lanka, including building schools and health centers, drilling hundreds of wells, and constructing homes for the underprivileged, in alignment with the country’s strategic development plans.
