Qatar Charity Launches a Project to Support the Wheat Value Chain

1/8/2026

Within the framework of its continuous efforts to strengthen food security and achieve sustainable development, Qatar Charity has launched a project to support the wheat value chain in the most vulnerable areas of rural Idlib and Aleppo. This initiative comes in response to the growing challenges faced by farmers, including rising production costs and declining agricultural yields, which have negatively affected food availability and the livelihoods of local communities.

The project aims to support local farmers and enhance the sustainability of agricultural production through integrated interventions covering all stages of agriculture, from cultivation and harvesting to processing and distribution. This approach contributes to ensuring the availability of bread as a staple food for daily consumption in Syria.

Direct Support for Agriculture and Agricultural Production

The project includes the provision of 300 tons of essential agricultural inputs, including seeds, fertilizers, and harvesting costs. These inputs are distributed to 300 farmers cultivating wheat and barley, including 200 wheat farmers in the rural areas of Idlib and Aleppo, and 100 barley farmers in the countryside of Aleppo. This support contributes to increasing production levels and improving farmers’ incomes and livelihoods.

From Seed to Bread

As part of the project’s integrated approach, wheat cultivation, harvesting, milling, and bread production are fully supported. Approximately 918 tons of wheat are purchased from local farmers and milled in local silos to produce around 720 tons of flour. Of this quantity, 150 tons are supplied to bakeries in Idlib, while 570 tons are allocated to bakeries in Aleppo.

The project is expected to produce approximately 1,275,000 loaves of bread daily over the course of a full year, benefiting nearly 3,000 families and helping meet their basic food needs.

Supporting Agricultural Units with Modern Equipment

The project also includes the establishment of an integrated agricultural support unit equipped with modern machinery, tractors, agricultural tools, and spare parts. In addition, maintenance services are provided, and farmers are connected to agricultural support services. These interventions contribute to reducing production costs, improving efficiency, and ensuring the sustainability of agricultural activities.

Supporting Women and Rural Development

In Aleppo, the project supports women-headed households by creating employment opportunities through the establishment of four bread production ovens managed by women. Around 80 women benefit from training, employment opportunities, and the provision of production supplies. This initiative contributes to increasing household income, empowering women economically, and enhancing their role in local economic activity.

Restoring the role of the Aleppo Directorate of Agriculture

Through this project, Qatar Charity supports the role of the Aleppo Directorate of Agriculture in strengthening the agricultural sector. The initiative focuses on achieving food security, supporting local production, and improving farmers’ resilience amid difficult economic and living conditions. It also contributes to reducing poverty, unemployment, and forced migration by promoting agricultural investment as a key pillar for community stability and long-term sustainable development.
