Qatar Charity strengthens sustainable livelihoods for families in Somalia

2/3/2026

Qatar Charity (QC), with the generous support of benevolent donors in Qatar, has successfully implemented 178 development projects in the food security sector across the Federal Republic of Somalia.

These initiatives aim to strengthen sustainable livelihood opportunities for the most vulnerable families, particularly those affected by recurring climate‑induced crises such as drought and desertification.

The projects fall within Qatar Charity’s continued humanitarian and development efforts to alleviate poverty and hunger, while improving living conditions for local communities experiencing repeated displacement due to diminishing natural resources and shrinking livelihood options.

The interventions targeted the outskirts of Baidoa, located in Somalia’s Southwest State, where 178 families benefited from a comprehensive package of productive livelihood projects designed to strengthen food security and enhance household self‑reliance. These included 121 sheep‑rearing projects and 57 cattle‑rearing projects, offering each family a productive asset that supports sustainable income generation, household dairy self‑sufficiency, and improved nutritional outcomes at both family and community levels.

In commenting on the initiative, Mr. Abdulfatah Adam, Country Director of Qatar Charity’s Somalia Branch, explained that these projects embody Qatar Charity’s mission to shift from emergency humanitarian response toward long‑term sustainable development. He emphasized that the projects serve as a practical model for empowering households to become self‑reliant, strengthening their resilience in the face of crises, and reducing dependence on emergency assistance.

Beneficiary families expressed deep appreciation for the support they received. Lul Ali Mukhtar said that the cattle‑rearing project has significantly improved her family’s income and ensured a consistent source of nutritious food, helping stabilize their overall living conditions.

Another beneficiary, Daoud Ibrahim Adam, noted that the project brought a positive transformation to his household by securing milk and a steady income for essential needs, affirming his commitment to preserving and expanding the project.

Qatar Charity implemented 233 food security projects last year alone, benefiting 267,585 individuals at a total cost of approximately QAR 7.5 million.
