Qatar Charity performs free heart surgeries for children in Bangladesh

Despite the challenges and exceptional circumstances facing the region, Qatar Charity (QC) organized a free medical and surgical camp in Bangladesh to treat children suffering from congenital heart defects.

The camp, held at Bangladesh Eye Hospital in the Capital, successfully provided life-saving treatment to 30 children from underprivileged families who were unable to afford the high costs of cardiac procedures.

A dedicated team of pediatric cardiologists, led by Professor Dr. Nurun Nahar Fatema, carried out all procedures with great care and professionalism. The medical team conducted comprehensive examinations before performing surgeries and interventional procedures tailored to each child’s condition.

This camp is part of Qatar Charity’s ongoing efforts to support vulnerable groups in Bangladesh. The organization has previously implemented four similar medical camps, benefiting more than 400 children suffering from critical heart conditions.

Speaking about the initiative, Dr. Fatema highlighted the urgent need for such interventions, saying: “The demand for these procedures is very high, especially because the required devices and catheters are extremely expensive. Many families simply cannot afford them. With the support of Qatar Charity's donors, we were able to provide the highest level of care for these children.”

She added: "We focused on treating the most vulnerable children whose families had no means to access treatment. These procedures give them a real chance to live healthy and normal lives."

For his part, Mr. Zakarya Al Motair, Country Director of Qatar Charity’s Bangladesh Branch, affirmed that organizing the camp during the holy month of Ramadan—particularly on the 27th night—carries deep humanitarian significance and reflects Qatar Charity’s steadfast commitment to saving lives and supporting the most vulnerable.

He added: “We are grateful to our donors and partners whose generosity made this possible. Together, we are not only treating illnesses but also transforming lives and building a healthier future for these children.”

The camp brought great joy and profound relief to the families of the beneficiary children, many of whom had struggled for years to find treatment for their sons and daughters.

The mother of two-year-old Jamil Molla shared her experience: “It was impossible for me to bear the cost of my child’s treatment. Thanks to Qatar Charity, we finally had the opportunity to get him treated.”

Similarly, the father of Abdullah expressed his gratitude: “My son has suffered from heart disease since birth. We tried everything, but financial hardship stood in our way. We are sincerely thankful to Qatar Charity and the generous people of Qatar for giving our child a new chance at life.”

It is worth noting that these free surgical procedures were carried out as part of the “27th Night Challenge,” launched by Qatar Charity during the holy month of Ramadan. The initiative is the largest fundraising event held via YouTube, aimed at supporting and implementing life‑saving humanitarian medical initiatives for the most vulnerable groups across several countries worldwide.
