Qatar Charity Opens Mosque and Qur’an Center in Côte d’Ivoire

4/2/2026

Qatar Charity (QC), with generous support from donors, has inaugurated a new project comprising a mosque and a Qur’an education and memorization center in Songon District of the Abidjan Region, in the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire.

The project aims to strengthen educational infrastructure and address pressing development needs in an area that lacks such facilities, with an expected positive social impact on the local community.

The opening ceremony was attended by several Ivorian officials, alongside members of the diplomatic corps, led by Mr. Rachid Himidi Al Maqareh, Representative of the Embassy of the State of Qatar in Abidjan.

During the ceremony, Mr. Abou Diallo, Deputy Mayor of Songon, praised Qatar Charity for implementing this vital project, which includes a Qur’an memorization center comprising six classrooms with a total area of 150 square meters, as well as a mosque covering 70 square meters.  He noted that the facility is fully furnished and equipped with essential amenities, including ablution areas and toilets, and can accommodate up to 200 worshippers.

Mr. Aboubakar Konaté, President of the Organization of Islamic Educational Institutions in Côte d’Ivoire (OEECI), — an organization affiliated with the Ministry of Education and responsible for supervising and improving Islamic educational institutions—expressed his appreciation for the implementation of this Islamic educational project in a densely populated area that was in urgent need of a mosque and Qur’an memorization classrooms.

For his part, Mr. Hasan Owda, Country Director of Qatar Charity’s offices in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire, stated that the project is expected to benefit around 500 people daily. He added that Qatar Charity, in cooperation with its partners, plans to implement a range of humanitarian and development projects in Côte d’Ivoire during the current year, as part of its ongoing efforts in the country.

It is worth noting that Qatar Charity’s office in Côte d’Ivoire implemented several Ramadan projects under the campaign “Good Starts With You”. The field team of the organization also took part, alongside the Embassy of the State of Qatar in Abidjan, in the distribution of Ramadan food baskets organized annually by the embassy, as part of Qatar’s humanitarian efforts to help ease living burdens on vulnerable families during the holy month of Ramadan.
