Qatar Charity delivers relief to families hit by severe drought in Somalia

4/26/2026

Backed by generous donor support and as part of its ongoing humanitarian response to Somalia’s worsening drought, Qatar Charity has delivered food parcels to 2,840 of the hardest-hit families in northeastern Somalia reaching more than 17,000 people. The assistance is intended to help save lives, meet essential needs, and reduce the risk of malnutrition among the most vulnerable groups.

Distribution areas

Distributions covered communities severely affected by successive drought spells, including Las Anod district and four surrounding villages, as well as Taleh, Hudun, and Buuhoodle. Priority was given to the most vulnerable families especially children, older people, and pregnant women.

Food security crisis

The assistance comes as Somalia faces a severe drought that has devastated livelihoods particularly among pastoral and farming communities further deepening the country’s food security crisis. International estimates released in April 2026 indicate that 6.0 to 6.99 million people representing 46% to 54% of the population require immediate humanitarian assistance to meet basic survival needs.

The parcels include essential staple foods to help meet families’ daily nutritional needs at a time of rapidly deteriorating livelihoods and rising food insecurity. Each parcel provides enough supplies to support a beneficiary family for one month.

Coordination and partnership

Distributions were carried out in coordination with local authorities and drought-response committees in the targeted areas to ensure assistance reached eligible beneficiaries efficiently and transparently, while strengthening the impact of humanitarian efforts on the ground.

Mr. Mohamed Deeri Fareh, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management in northern  State, praised Qatar Charity’s efforts, saying: “We value the work carried out by Qatar Charity, and we extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to the people of Qatar for their generous and continued support to their brothers and sisters in Somalia. These interventions help save lives and ease the suffering of communities under these difficult circumstances.”

Emergency response

Mr. Osman Hussein Darod, Governor of Sool Region, said: “Delivering these projects in the most affected areas reflects a needs-based response to local communities. We highly appreciate the humanitarian support of generous donors in Qatar, which helps ease hardship and directly strengthens resilience and livelihood stability.”

Mr. Abdul Fattah Adam Moalim, Director of Qatar Charity’s office in Somalia, said: “This project is part of the emergency response plan Qatar Charity is implementing in Somalia. We reaffirm our commitment to continue providing humanitarian assistance to people in need, in cooperation with our local and international partners.”
