Qatar Charity Provides Housing for Vulnerable Families in Sri Lanka

6/24/2026

With the support of generous donors in Qatar, Qatar Charity (QC) continues its humanitarian efforts in Sri Lanka through its housing initiative, having recently handed over 10 fully furnished homes to the most vulnerable families in the districts of Anuradhapura and Ampara. This step reflects the organization’s commitment to improving beneficiaries’ quality of life and strengthening their social stability.

Suitable Living Environment

The homes were built in accordance with standards that accommodate different family sizes, with areas ranging between 45 and 60 square meters. This ensures a suitable living environment that preserves human dignity and meets the essential needs of the recipient families.

Qatar Charity adopted precise criteria in selecting beneficiaries, primarily targeting families already supported under its sponsorship programs who lack permanent housing. Nine homes were allocated to families of sponsored orphans, while one home was provided to a highly vulnerable family identified with the support of a Qatari donor.

Beneficiaries’ Reflections

Several beneficiaries expressed their deep gratitude for this support. Fathima Rifana said: "For years, we lived in fear of rain and uncertainty. Today, I finally have a safe place for my children. This house is not just walls—it is our dignity restored."

Similarly, Ismail Naheema shared his joy, stating: "I never imagined having a proper home in my lifetime. Thanks to Qatar Charity and its donors, my children now live in a clean and safe environment that helps them learn and pursue their dreams."

Meanwhile, Mohamed Aseem highlighted the transformative impact of the new home, adding: "This house has given us comfort and protection, and restored our hope for the future."

Growing Needs

Sri Lanka continues to face significant challenges in the housing sector. Estimates indicate a need for nearly 800,000 additional housing units to meet growing demand, particularly in rural areas and among low-income and conflict-affected communities. A considerable proportion of more than six million households still live in incomplete or temporary housing amid a lack of basic services, underscoring the importance of sustained humanitarian interventions in this field.

In this context, Qatar Charity is expanding its efforts in Sri Lanka. A new project is currently underway to construct 10 additional homes for low-income families. Plans are also in progress to establish an integrated residential complex comprising 27 housing units, alongside educational and community service facilities.
