Qatar Charity's Sri Lanka Office has successfully completed a major vision care initiative under its global health programs as part of the Challenge 27 Campaign, bringing renewed hope and improved quality of life to hundreds of vulnerable individuals across the country. With a total project cost of QAR 282,480, the initiative enabled the completion of 300 cataract surgeries and the distribution of 555 prescription spectacles, which includes vision correction support for 150 school students.
The program was launched in response to the growing need for accessible eye care services among low-income families, elderly individuals suffering from cataracts, and children whose educational performance was being affected by uncorrected vision problems. By partnering with qualified medical professionals and healthcare institutions, Qatar Charity ensured that beneficiaries received essential eye examinations, surgical interventions, and corrective eyewear free of charge.
The initiative has generated significant humanitarian impact by addressing one of the leading causes of preventable blindness and visual impairment. For many beneficiaries, restored eyesight has meant the ability to regain independence, return to work, care for family members, and actively participate in community life. The provision of spectacles has also improved learning opportunities for students by enabling them to see clearly in classrooms and engage more effectively in their studies.
Beyond the direct medical benefits, the project has created positive social and economic outcomes for families. Improved vision reduces dependency on caregivers, eases the burden on household members, and enhances overall well-being. For many families, the intervention has translated into greater productivity, improved mobility, and renewed confidence in daily life.
Among the beneficiaries was Mrs. Zeenath Zaroofa, who had been waiting for more than a year on a government hospital waiting list for cataract treatment. "I was on the government hospital waiting list for over a year, hoping to receive this surgery. Thanks to Qatar Charity, I was able to undergo the procedure at a private hospital without any financial burden. I am very grateful for this opportunity," she said.
Country director of Qatar Charity Sri Lankan branch Mr. Mahmoud Abu Khalifa extended his sincere gratitude to the donors for their generous support, which will contribute to the treatment of eye patients and the improvement of their vision, thereby helping to support them on humanitarian, psychological, and social levels.

By restoring sight to 300 individuals and providing spectacles to 555 beneficiaries, Qatar Charity has demonstrated how targeted healthcare interventions can create lasting change, empowering individuals, strengthening families, and building healthier communities across Sri Lanka.
This intervention forms part of our health program initiatives, which also encompass malnutrition projects for children under five and pregnant women, as well as support for chronic disease treatment. Collectively, these initiatives benefit more than 2,000 cases, with a total budget of QR 988,680.
