Qatar Charity’s field team in Sudan mounted a two-pronged emergency response to support people displaced by the war in North Kordofan State and communities affected by heavy rains and a cyclone that struck Al-Ghubsha in Um Rawaba Locality, causing widespread damage across the state.
Qatar Charity distributed 3,600 food baskets to approximately 21,000 people who had arrived in El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan State, after military clashes intensified last August in Um Arda and other areas. It also provided baskets of essential food items to families affected by the cyclone, floods and heavy rains, which forced hundreds of families from their homes after the houses collapsed.
High-Impact Interventions
Speaking at the launch of the food-basket distribution for people affected by the war in the state, Dr. Mohammed Ismail, Humanitarian Aid Commissioner for North Kordofan State, praised Qatar Charity’s recent food-assistance initiatives supporting community kitchens and school students. He said: “We thank Qatar Charity for its high-impact interventions, which address people’s daily needs, and we call on the organization to provide further support through food baskets and other forms of humanitarian assistance during this emergency.”
Rains and Storms
Ahmed Abdel Wahid, Executive Director of Um Rawaba Locality, said the area had been hit by heavy rains, a powerful cyclone and thunderstorms that swept through Al-Ghubsha, east of Um Rawaba city, affecting around 400 families. He said Qatar Charity’s rapid response demonstrated a strong humanitarian commitment and reflected the deep-rooted bonds of fraternity between the Qatari and Sudanese peoples. The response was warmly welcomed by those affected.
Mitigating the Impact of Disasters
Several government bodies and community organizations expressed their thanks and appreciation to philanthropists and benefactors in Qatar, who have consistently stood by their brothers and sisters in Sudan and helped alleviate the effects of war and natural disasters, particularly during the rainy season.
Samia Babiker, a resident of the affected Al-Ghubsha area, said families urgently needed food assistance to help them regain stability after returning from displacement to communities left deserted by the damage.
Sumaya Ibrahim Adam, another affected resident, added that after the rains and floods swept through their communities, families were left without shelter and in need of assistance. She said schoolchildren had suffered greatly.
For his part, Abdel Nasser Abdullah, Executive Director of Sheikan Locality, oversaw the distribution of part of the food assistance at the locality’s headquarters in El Obeid. He said Qatar Charity’s generous support had reached displacement camps and families in need and prayed that the donors in Qatar would be rewarded for their generosity.
