Qatar Charity Performs 250 Cataract Surgeries in Mauritania

Qatar Charity (QC) has begun performing 250 cataract surgeries and distributing prescription glasses and medicines to patients in El Ghaire, Moudjeria, and Legrane, Mauritania.

The initiative is being implemented in cooperation with Mauritania's National Program for Blindness Control and coordinated with the Boullate Organization for Social Solidarity and Development, the Afaq Association for Culture, Development and Awareness, and Legrane Municipality.

The launch was attended by Mr. Abdel Hadi Al-Khayarin, Acting Chargé d’Affaires at the Embassy of Qatar in Mauritania; Mr. Mohamed Abdallah Sid Habib, District Governor (Hakem) of Guerou Department; Mr. El Hacen Taleb Issa, Mayor of El Ghaire; and several civil society representatives.

Mr. Omer Abdelaziz Mohamed, Director of Qatar Charity’s Mauritania Branch, said the eye care initiative reflects the organization’s commitment to serving people and easing the suffering of vulnerable communities. He added that cooperation among government institutions, civil society organizations, and healthcare partners is essential to achieving sustainable humanitarian and development impact.

Mr. Abdel Hadi Al-Khayarin, Acting Chargé d’Affaires at the Embassy of Qatar in Mauritania, said the initiative reflects the strong ties between Qatar and Mauritania and their shared values of solidarity and humanitarian service. He praised the role of Qatari institutions, particularly Qatar Charity, in supporting Mauritania’s development efforts and improving the quality of life of vulnerable communities.

He also thanked the Mauritanian authorities, donors in Qatar and healthcare partners who contributed to organizing and implementing the initiative.

Mr. El Hacen Taleb Issa said El Ghaire was proud to host an initiative that demonstrates the close relationship between the Qatari and Mauritanian peoples. Mr. Mohamed Abdallah Sid Habib highlighted its positive impact on patients’ lives and its role in promoting volunteerism and humanitarian service.

Beneficiaries welcomed the initiative for bringing essential eye care closer to their communities. Ms. Fatimetou Dah thanked Qatar Charity’s donors for helping restore her sight, while Mr. Abdallah Ould Abderrahmane expressed his happiness at finally receiving the treatment he had long awaited.
