Qatar Charity builds solar-powered seawater desalination plant in Djibouti

Qatar Charity (QC) has laid the foundation stone for a solar-powered seawater desalination plant in Dalaf, Obock region, Djibouti, marking a major step toward sustainable development and improved access to clean water in the target area. This eco-friendly facility is only the second desalination plant of its kind in Djibouti. The plant will provide safe drinking water to approximately 5,000 residents. Construction is expected to be completed within a year at an estimated cost of QAR 2 million. The project includes a 30-cubic-meter storage tank, public water taps, and basins for livestock, ensuring both human and agricultural needs are met. Officials hailed the project as a game-changer, saying it will deliver clean water through sustainable technology and strengthen Djibouti’s partnership with global humanitarian organizations. They stressed its role in overcoming water scarcity, a major barrier to development in Obock, and paving the way for stability and socio-economic progress. Ms. Ghada Ezzedine Ahmed, Director of Qatar Charity’s Djibouti Branch, highlighted that the desalination plant is part of a series of integrated interventions in water, education, and health sectors aimed at improving living standards and supporting local development. She noted that the project will help ease the community’s suffering from water scarcity and provide a permanent source that ensures their stability. Residents welcomed the initiative with enthusiasm, expressing deep gratitude to Qatari donors and Qatar Charity for addressing a critical need. For many families and herders, the plant promises a dramatic improvement in daily life, reducing the hardships of fetching water from distant or unsafe sources. It is worth noting that Qatar Charity has previously implemented around 120 water projects in Djibouti, including surface and artesian wells and household water networks, benefiting more than 40,000 people.

Qatar launches land bridge of humanitarian aid in support of Palestinians in Gaza
In implementation of the directives of the Amir of the State of Qatar, HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the State of Qatar has launched a land bridge of humanitarian aid in response to the urgent needs and to alleviate the suffering of the brotherly Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip, which will be delivered through the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the Arab Republic of Egypt. This initiative comes in the wake of the signing of the Gaza Ceasefire Agreement during the Sharm El-Sheikh Summit and extends Qatar’s continuous support to the brotherly Palestinian people. The humanitarian convoy includes 87,754 shelter tents provided by the Qatar Fund for Development, Qatar Charity, and the Qatar Red Crescent Society, offering safe and dignified shelter for approximately 436,170 individuals from affected families. This effort comes at a critical time, as more than 288,000 families have lost their homes as a result of the Israeli aggression. The launch of the land bridge was attended by HE Minister of State for International Cooperation Maryam bint Ali bin Nasser Al Misnad, CEO of Qatar Charity Yousuf bin Ahmed Al Kuwari, Assistant Secretary-General for Communication and Resource Development at Qatar Red Crescent Society Mohammed Ahmed Al Beshri, and Deputy Director-General for Shared Services at the Qatar Fund for Development Nasser Mohammed Al Marzouqi. This initiative embodies the State of Qatar’s commitment to standing by the brotherly Palestinian people, strengthening their resilience in the face of humanitarian challenges, and supporting recovery efforts aimed at building a future of greater stability and dignity. HE Minister of State for International Cooperation Maryam bint Ali bin Nasser Al Misnad stated in press remarks that these aid efforts are part of the first phase of a comprehensive relief campaign, launched in conjunction with the ceasefire agreement. She emphasized that this humanitarian initiative reflects Qatar’s unwavering commitment to standing by the Palestinian people and supporting them under different circumstances. Mr. Yousuf bin Ahmed Al-Kuwari, CEO of Qatar Charity, said that since the onset of the crisis, Qatari charitable organizations have established land and air bridges to deliver aid to Gaza. He announced the launch of a land bridge carrying up to 80,000 tents—enough to shelter a quarter of Gaza’s population, indicating that Qatari aid covers comprehensive relief, including shelter, food, water, and housing. Al-Kuwari stressed that the Qatari efforts also include food baskets, medical supplies, and hygiene kits, noting that most tent deliveries began two weeks ago and will continue until the next week. He stated that the supplies will be ready at the crossings and will enter Gaza as soon as they open, ensuring they reach the Palestinian people.
