Commissioner-General of UNRWA visits Qatar Charity, applauds its humanitarian efforts worldwide

HE Sheikh Hamad bin Nasser Al Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Charity, met with HE Philip Lazarini, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), in the presence of Yusef bin Ahmed Al-Kuwari, CEO of Qatar Charity, during a visit he paid to Qatar Charity’s headquarters recently.

During the meeting, the exchange of views on issues of common interest took place, and the aspects of cooperation between the two sides were discussed. The meeting also talked over the difficulties facing international humanitarian organizations working in Palestine, in addition to the difficulties experienced by UNRWA in terms of funding.

During the meeting, the two parties also discussed the possibility of developing joint capacity building programs, the prospects for strategic partnership in the areas of advocacy, and the participation in international events, in addition to research. Besides, Qatar Charity’s worldwide humanitarian efforts, particularly those made in support of the Palestinian people, were reviewed during the meeting. 

The Commissioner-General of UNRWA, expressed his great admiration for the efforts made by Qatar Charity worldwide, praising its governance procedures and technology usage, especially in the field of fundraising and spending on its various projects.

He underlined the importance of cooperation and partnership with Qatar Charity and developing it to the strategic level and working together to convey the voice of the Palestinian people to international forums. He also noted the suffering of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza, especially in light of the coronavirus pandemic, underscoring the right of Palestinian refugees to access education and health and aspire for a better life.

HE Sheikh Hamad bin Nasser Al Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Charity, affirmed Qatar Charity's commitment to support the Palestinian people and contribute to alleviating their suffering.

He said that Qatar Charity would spare no effort to continue supporting the Palestinian people in the humanitarian and development fields, in coordination and cooperation with humanitarian partners, especially United Nations agencies,

 He also noted the importance of overcoming difficulties associated with the performance of the humanitarian institutions operating in Palestine, emphasizing the need to work within the international system, and the importance of coordination and cooperation.

It is worth mentioning that Qatar Charity has spent approximately $ 140 million on developmental, social and humanitarian projects for the benefit of Palestinians in the 2015-2020 period. Currently, more than 16,000 Palestinian orphans are under the sponsorship of Qatar Charity.

Qatar Charity has a proven track record of cooperation with UNRWA. Three agreements have already been signed, including a strategic agreement.  The last $1.5mn pact was signed this year to support food security.
