Qatari humanitarian organizations launch joint campaign to support Somalia

6/10/2018 |

The join campaign entitled “Somalia: A Call For Brothers” will be kicked off on Sunday, Ramadan 25, 1439 AH, corresponding to June 10, 2018, with the participation of four Qatari humanitarian institutions, which are Qatar Red Crescent, Qatar Charity, Silatech and Education Above All Foundation.

The campaign will be supervised by the Regulatory Authority for Charitable Activities (RACA) and will be supported by the Qatar Fund For Development (QFFD). The campaign is aimed at the embodiment of the spirit of solidarity between the Qatari and Somali peoples, especially in the Holy Month of Ramadan.

This join campaign also demonstrates that the Qatari people stand by their brothers in Somalia, who are living under the worsening humanitarian situation as a result of the recurrent drought, and unstable situations caused by conflicts.

Targeted Projects

The campaign aims to meet the humanitarian needs of the Somali people by providing water, health and education services and development projects in addition to humanitarian intervention in areas affected by floods and providing shelter, food baskets and medical materials worth more than QR60mn.

The campaign will focus on promoting a number of projects such as drilling and rehabilitating wells, rehabilitating water networks, providing livelihood projects, supporting the agricultural sector, educating children, building and rehabilitating schools and health centers, providing treatment to patients, Distributing Food Baskets, establishing social centers, and repairing and rehabilitating roads.

Charities involved in this campaign urges philanthropists and good doers both individuals and institutions in Qatar to seize the last ten days of the holy month of Ramadan to support these projects to benefit the affected people of Somalia and stand by them in order to alleviate their human suffering and garner the support to compensate for the great shortage in infrastructure, services and facilities in the areas of health, education, shelter, food, economic empowerment and water in Somalia.

Charities also noted that this season is a month of compassion and solidarity among the people of one nation and feeling of the pain of others and their basic living difficulties.

They also underlined the role of the various media and social media influencers in mobilizing the support for the campaign and promoting its various projects, noting the radio and television coverage will be carried out live in the framework of the campaign on Ramadan 27, 1439 AH. The campaign is expected to end on the 29th of Ramadan.

Alarming International Indicators

The statistics issued by a number of United Nations (UN) organizations and international institutions indicate the deteriorating situation in Somalia because of the frequent droughts and conflicts. The most disturbing indicators are as follow:

  • More than 420,000 Somalis need urgent medical assistance.
  • Somalia has the lowest rates of enrollment at educational institutions in the world, with only 30 per cent of children studying in primary schools and 26 per cent in secondary schools.
