Qatar Charity draws attention to humanitarian action at TEDxYouth@AlDafna

"How happy she was while working as a guide for me in a Syrian Refugees camp in Lebanon without any pay, refusing to take even one of the winter blankets that she was helping me distribute to the refugees."

This is what that drew the attention of the participants of the TEDxYouth@AlDafna conference during a speech delivered by Ms. Asmaa Al Hammadi, a renowned media figure,  who narrated the story of Ghazal, a 9 year old  Syrian refugee girl, who helped Al Hammadi in this humanitarian mission despite being a little girl.

Little Ghazal

Speaking at the conference, Al Hammadi also talked about her humanitarian experience and the significant places that she visited as a member of Qatar Charity’s social network delegation.

“I offered her a blanket to protect her and her family from the cold of winter, but she told me that the blanket should given to those most in need,” Al Hammadi continued telling the story of Ghazal. “When I said goodbye to her at the departure time, I felt that that she is the one who really helped me by providing information about the beneficiaries and their places of residence,” Al Hammadi added.

Role Model

The young girl in the story is a role model to promote the culture of giving among youths and encourage children to get involved in humanitarian, charitable, and voluntary work, Al Hammadi noted.

Besides, Qatar Charity, as a community partner of the TEDxYouth@AlDafna conference, set up a pavilion at its associated exhibition. The pavilion had many publication on humanitarian topics for children and adults, in addition to presenting a humanitarian challenge that simulated the suffering of those in need in getting water.

 Community Partner

“Sponsoring the TEDxYouth@AlDafna conference by Qatar Charity as a community partner came as a contribution to  serving our Qatari society, and as a desire to promote the culture of volunteer and humanitarian work among young school and university students, contribute to providing them with various skills,” said Jassem Al-Emadi, director of the Local Development Department, Qatar Charity.

“Qatar Charity’s pavilion at the conference aimed at acquainting visitors with its humanitarian efforts within and outside the country, especially its cultural role inspired by the Qatar National Vision 2030, in addition to demonstrating its support for youth and voluntary initiatives,” added Al-Emadi.

Community Stars

“Qatar Charity was pleased at being part of the conference, which was organized and implemented by students, and provided Qatar Charity with an opportunity to showcase its experience in integrating community stars and social media influencers into humanitarian action on the ground through a speech delivered by a member of its social network,” noted Al-Emadi.

Mr. Mohamed Majed Khidr, director general of the TEDxYouth@AlDafna conference said, “The participation of Qatar Charity in the conference as a community partner in the conference came to raise the awareness among preparatory and secondary students about humanitarian and relief work.”

Interactive Activities

He also noted that Qatar Charity’ pavilion contributed greatly to educating students through interactive activities that made them feel the suffering of the homeless and displaced living in the camps.

The pavilion included many publications in Arabic and English for adults and children, most notably "Volunteers at the Heart of the Field", and the 21th issue of the Ghiras magazine, in addition to having a display screen showcasing Qatar Charity’s programs, activities, and projects implemented world.

Humanitarian Challenge

The pavilion also brought a humanitarian challenge that made young people of both sexes feel the suffering of those in need in fetching water by urging them to carry gallons filled with water for a distance of few meters in the same ways  the most vulnerable carry water gallons for long distances in different countries of the world.

“This participation made me feel what the needy in poor societies of the world suffer in fetching water from long distances,” said, Mohammed Abdul Karim Muhammad Hassan Al-Talib, a student at Musab Bin Omeir Independent Secondary School for Boys, who participated in the humanitarian challenge by carrying a gallon filled with water.

He added that the challenge also reminded the participants of countless blessings, especially obtaining the clean water without any physical exertion, even it is brought to their homes easily without any trouble."

Dignitaries

The pavilion was visited many dignitaries, including Dr. Hayat Marafi, Executive Director of the Qatar Debate Center who lauded Qatar Charity for its pavilion at the conference.

“It addresses the minds of young people directly by providing wonderful practical models of volunteer and charitable work, especially the idea of the humanitarian challenge that highlighted the suffering of the needy in obtaining water,” said Marafi, noting that it is an effective way to integrate youth in humanitarian work.

It is worth mentioning that TEDx is a programme of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group.
