About Senegal
Senegal is an African country located at the far west of the continent. It is known for its rich history and relative political stability in the region.
Senegal borders the Atlantic Ocean and is surrounded by Mauritania to the north, Mali to the east, and Guinea and Guinea-Bissau to the south. It almost completely encloses The Gambia from three sides, giving it a unique geographical position. Its capital city is Dakar, one of the most important ports and economic hubs in West Africa.
The population of Senegal is approximately 18 million, and the official language is French, alongside national languages such as Wolof, which is widely spoken in daily life.
The dominant religion is Islam, with about 94% of the population being Muslim, most of whom follow Sufi orders like the Tijaniyya and Mouridiyya. There is also a Christian minority and followers of traditional religions.
Politically, Senegal is a presidential republic and has experienced peaceful transitions of power since gaining independence from France in 1960. The current president is Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who assumed office in April 2024.
Economically, Senegal relies on agriculture, fishing, and phosphate mining, along with food industries and oil refining. The official currency is the West African CFA franc (XOF), which is shared with several other countries in the region.
Senegal covers an area of about 197,000 square kilometers, and its Human Development Index (HDI) is classified as medium to low, reflecting the developmental challenges the country faces despite its political stability.Investment volume by Category
