With support from philanthropists in Qatar and as part of its ongoing humanitarian efforts to support the health sector in Ghana, Qatar Charity has recently succeeded in alleviating the suffering of dozens of patients, most of them children, in the Ghanaian capital, Accra. This was achieved through a new, qualitative medical intervention aimed at treating congenital heart disease using the latest cardiac catheterization techniques in the world.
Qatar Charity, in collaboration with the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC), performed "heart puncture" surgeries on 40 patients. Over a week of meticulous medical work, complex cases such as patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), ventricular septal defects (VSD), atrial septal defects (ASD), and pulmonary valve stenosis (PS) were repaired.
Third Edition
The medical team, which arrived in Accra in cooperation with Qatar Charity, was able to use advanced cardiac catheterization techniques and perform corrective surgeries without the need for open-heart surgery, contributing to rapid recovery and reducing potential risks for patients. Through this third medical initiative, Qatar Charity aims to build local medical capacity, in addition to treating patients.
Dr. Abdul Samad Tanko, CEO of the University of Ghana Medical Center, expressed his appreciation for the ongoing partnership with Qatar Charity and his happiness with the success of the medical mission, which directly contributed to saving the lives of 40 people. He said that the partnership with Qatar Charity has a long-term impact, as it transfers skills and expertise to our local team and provides them with direct practical training under the guidance of international specialists in the field. This is crucial to building a sustainable, high-level cardiac care program in Ghana.
For his part, Professor Muhammad Tawfiq Numan, head of the visiting medical team to Ghana, a senior cardiologist at the University of Texas, stated that they had found exceptional cooperation from the University of Ghana Medical Center team.
He said: "We renew our deep gratitude to Qatar Charity for its continued support in achieving these humanitarian missions that change people's lives for the better." He added: "We are not just treating hearts; we are building hope and a healthier future." Professor Nana Akyia Yaw, who oversaw the coordination of operations at the specialized medical center, expressed her gratitude and appreciation for the ongoing efforts of Qatar Charity's office in Ghana and for the partners' commitment to providing the support and enabling environment for the success of the project, which has had a positive impact on the lives of people in Ghana.
