Qatar Charity constructs 256 new mosques in Bangladesh in one year

With the generous support of donors in Qatar, Qatar Charity has built 256 fully equipped mosques across Bangladesh between July 2024 and July 2025. The initiative provided safe spaces for worship, restoring a sense of peace and spiritual comfort to more than 51,200 worshippers in rural and semi-urban areas, and enabling them to perform their religious duties in a faith-filled environment.

The initiative has replaced fragile, makeshift prayer spaces with durable, well-equipped mosques. Each mosque includes ablution areas, prayer mats, lighting, fans, and sound systems, creating an environment where communities can gather for prayer, learning, and social activities.

The construction of these mosques comes in response to an urgent need in the targeted areas, where many worshippers had long prayed in structures made of tin or mud—lacking basic safety and comfort. During the rainy season, water flooded the floors, while in summer, the absence of fans made congregational prayers extremely difficult.

“This mosque used to be nothing more than a broken tin shed with no electricity or proper flooring,” recalled Md Babul Khan, president of a mosque committee in Barisal district. “When it rained, water poured in from every side, and people had to spread plastic sheets to pray. Many stopped coming because it was unsafe and uncomfortable. Now, thanks to benefactors in Qatar and Qatar Charity, we have a proper mosque with all essentials.”

He noted that these new mosques have quickly become vibrant centers of spiritual and social life. Beyond daily prayers, they now host Qur’an lessons, youth activities, and community meetings.

“This is more than just a building—it has become the heart of our village,” said Abul Ali, a mosque secretary from Faridpur district. “Every day, more people attend prayers, and we finally have space for teaching children and holding meetings. We never imagined such a transformation would be possible.”

Local authorities have also acknowledged the wider social advantages of the initiative. “Building mosques is an investment in the moral, spiritual, and social fabric of our nation,” noted Md. Shahadat Hussen, a government official. “Qatar Charity’s efforts not only support religious practices but also strengthen education, unity, and community values in Bangladesh.”

“The smiles and satisfaction of the beneficiaries are our greatest reward,” affirmed Zakarya Ali Al Motair, Country Director of Qatar Charity’s Bangladesh Office. “We believe these mosques will remain places of peace, unity, and guidance for generations to come.”

It is worth mentioning that over the past five years, Qatar Charity has constructed more than 600 mosques across Bangladesh, providing a safe, dignified, and welcoming environment for over 150,000 worshippers to pray.
