  • Water wells meet the areas' needs for water since they have been suffering from drought and shortage in drinking water. They also serve schools and mosques.
  • Chief of Garut City: We thank Qatar's philanthropists who spent their money through QC to help provide the city with clean water and protect its people from diseases

In the first quarter of 2016, QC drilled more than 239 wells in several areas which suffer from drought and shortage in clean drinking water in Indonesia. QC always attempts to support needy groups of the societies and help save their dignity.

The wells provide the inhabitants with clean drinking water, and water for house use. The wells are usually drilled in the areas where there is shortage in drinking water and where mosques and schools do not have water resources. In the first 3 months of 2016, the total cost of projects was 1,300,000 QR.

Facing Drought

QC implemented these projects as part of its Water and Sanitation projects for the people of Indonesia. In 2015, QC implemented 841 water projects at a cost of 4,700,000 QR. So far, QC has implemented 3,281 projects at a total cost of 17,500,000 QR.

Mr. Karam Zeinhom, Director of QC's Office in Indonesia, said, "The water and sanitation projects are a priority at QC. We ensure to implement these projects to face drought, and support the educational process through offering the students a healthy environment". Mr. Zeinhom also explained how services related to people's lives and health are key projects at QC.

"We thank the philanthropists and donors from Qatar who helped make these projects a reality. These projects are essential to the people of Indonesia since it meets their main need: water," he added.

Garut Village

One of the important projects QC implemented in the field of Water and Sanitation last year was Garut Village. Garut suffered from a dire shortage in drinking water. Only 12% of clean water was used. Thanks to QC, the city's water conditions became better. The 2,500,000 inhabitants were provided with clean drinking water. QC drilled 350 wells in 2015 in accordance with an agreement signed with Rudy Gunwan, City Chief, in September 2014. The cost of the project was 1,750,000 QR.

Mr. Rudy explained how such project helped the people so much. They started using the wells instead of the ponds whose water was used in wudu and personal hygiene. Children used to use that water at schools, too.

Mr. Rudy spoke about how he had signed a cooperation agreement with QC for the establishment of 350 wells last year. "I did not expect, however, that they would actually do it. I told my colleagues that if they drill only 50 wells, it would be a huge success".

Mr. Gunwan added, “Many promised, yet only QC made it happen. We thank QC and the philanthropists from Qatar for spending their money to provide the city with water. Such projects help protect us and our children from diseases.”

Garut city is situated on an area of 300 km2 and has a population of 2,500,000 people. It depends basically on agriculture thus it is considered the neediest for water in Indonesia.
