Qatar Charity marks International Day to Protect Education from Attack
- Qatar Charity implements projects globally to protect children's right to education
Today, September 9, 2020, the whole world, for the first time, is marking the International Day to Protect Education from Attack, adopted by a UN General Assembly Resolution, which was called for by Her Highness Sheikha Moza bin Nasser.
Spearheaded by the State of Qatar, the resolution aims to garner global advocacy to ensure accountability for the continued, deliberate attacks on education and the prevalent armed violence experienced by children worldwide. It also aims to raise awareness of the plight of children affected by armed conflict, who are in the most desperate need of educational support.
The International Day to Protect Education from Attack provides an annual platform for the international community to review progress and new data and make commitments towards effective mechanisms to end impunity for those who attack schools.
HH Sheikha Moza presented the proposal to establish an annual International Day to Protect Education from Attack at the annual Social Forum of the Human Rights Council in Geneva las year.
She called for stopping attacks on schools and holding the perpetrators of the heinous attacks to account, so that the millions of children deprived of education in conflict-hit zones can aspire to a better future.
Qatar Charity (QC), which works in several crisis-hit regions worldwide through its field teams, is fully aware of the damage caused by these attacks and their impacts on the future of generations. It, therefore, continues to implement many projects to mitigate the negative effects of the conflict, especially on schools and educational facilities, prevent children from dropping out of school, and encourage them to continue their studies.
Projects Worldwide
In the education field, Qatar Charity works in more than 30 countries across Africa, Asia and Europe. The protection of education in crisis-affected zones is among the most significant work area of Qatar Charity, as it seeks to provide quality education in many countries and refugee camps.
Concerning education during crises and disasters, Qatar Charity works on establishing, furnishing, and repairing educational institutions, providing school bags, textbooks, and tuition fees, and offering e-learning services to ensure quality education for all.
Qatar Charity is among international organizations, which are actively working in the education sector of areas affected by crises and disasters. Besides, it is one of the top contributor to achieving the sustainable development goals related to education by 2030. It also works on providing quality education for all as part of the measures taken in emergencies.
Education in Emergencies
Qatar Charity implemented projects and provided aid in support of education during crises and disasters at a cost of more than 64 million Qatari riyals between 2019 and 2020, benefiting 765,000 persons.
Qatar Charity implements education projects in emergencies in Turkey, Syria, Palestine, Lebanon, Bangladesh, Yemen and Indonesia, working on the maintenance and reconstruction of educational institutions damaged due to the conflict.
Qatar Charity has printed and distributed textbooks within Syria at a cost of QR10mn, beefing more than 638,000 students.
In Somalia, it has provided fee education for returnee children, and built a secondary school in Gedo at a cost of more than one million Qatari riyals. It provides aid to students in Iraq, while in Palestine, it works on the construction, maintenance and expansion of schools, in addition to addressing the needs of students. Qatar Charity has operated student housing for Rohingya students.
Partnerships and Initiatives
Qatar Charity has joined several international initiatives to seve education during crises, especially the QUEST initiative sponsored by the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD).
It is a Qatari initiative that seeks to provide education and training to nearly 400 thousand Syrian refugees within Syria and in Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq and Turkey. The total amount of the initiative exceeds USD 100 million.
Qatar Charity also contributed to the World Refugee School initiative as a founding member of its global board of directors, aiming at provide quality education to refugees and displaced persons all over the world.
To protect education in crisis-hit areas, Qatar Charity has inked several agreements with international organizations, including an agreement with UNICEF in Somalia on building and rehabilitating 10 schools, meeting the requirements of 60 schools, and training teachers.
E-Learning
Qatar Charity has printed one million textbooks and distributed 10 million textbooks to schoolchildren in 2019 and 2020.
As the lack of recognition of academic certificates in the conflict-hit Syria posed a great challenge to the education sector, Qatar Charity, in partnership with the World Refugee School (WRS), designed an e-learning project to provide the internationally recognized certificates to children. For this purpose, Qatar Charity designed an integrated digital platform and digital labs in schools where students can do assignments.
Schools
Qatar Charity, in cooperation and coordination with the directorates of education and local councils in Aleppo and Idleb, rehabilitated 73 schools, carrying out comprehensive maintenance work. All the schools were equipped with whiteboards, seats and desks, office furniture to receive 22,754 boys and girls, as well as 1,002 male and female teachers.
In response to the urgent appeal made by the education directorates over the overcrowding in the camps and the lack of spaces for educational activities, Qatar Charity has provided caravans equipped with school benches, air conditioners, writing boards, heaters, fire extinguishers, and first aid kits, befitting 2,500 children directly.
The total educational projects of Qatar Charity have benefited more than 1.2 million Syrian children aged 3-17 years over the last five years of the humanitarian crisis within Syria.
