For the benefit of 7,000 people in Yemen, QC continues to implement relief projects for the affected and displaced Yemenis in Al Baydaa, Ma'rib, and Taiz at a total cost of 500,000 QR for the benefit of 7,000 people.

The project was financed by the waqf (mortmain property) of Jassim Darwish. It included distributing 600 food parcels each comprised of 50 Kg of wheat, 10 Kg of sugar, 10 Kg of rice, 900 g of dried milk, 5 liters of oil, a pack of legumes (24 cans),1kg of tea, 2,400 blankets and 2,400 suits for children.

The project covered Al Qahirah, Al Mudhaffar, Salh, Mashra'a Wa Hadnan Districts in Taiz; Majzar District in Ma'rib; Al Baydaa, As Sawma'ah, Mukayras, Az Zahir, Dhi Na'im, and As Sawadiah Districts in Al Baydaa.

Thousands of families lost their houses and their sources of income; these people were forced to leave their homes.

Mr. Mohammed Al Ka'bi, QC's Relief Director, said,"600 families benefited from the food supplies and blankets, and 2,400 children from the clothes. 7,000 people were made happy because of the aids. QC contributed to the alleviation of their sufferance, and reinforced their psychological and food stability. I encourage all the Qatari philanthropists and good doers living in Qatar to aid their brothers and sisters in Yemen.   It is out of brotherly duty and Islamic commitment to relieve the needy that the philanthropists in Qatar should contribute to sending urgent aids to the Yemenis".

For his part, Mr. Abdul Kareem Shiban, Member of the House of Representatives in Taiz, said, "Such projects' impacts do not include filling empty stomachs only. Rather, they help build the society and reconnect its members despite the threat of breaking apart most of Yemini cities face. In Yemen, the number of needy people is increasing; they need more humanitarian attention especially that the list of their needs is growing as well."

Humanitarian Response

QC hosted a preparatory workshop organized by QC and 12 other humanitarian organizations. It was attended by His Excellency Mr. Abdul-Raqib Saif Fath, Minister of Local Administration and the Chairman of the Higher Committee for Relief in Yemen.

The initiative committee included the Higher Committee for Relief in Yemen, Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Arab League, United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (Saudi Arabia), The International Committee of the Red Cross (Switzerland), Qatar Charity Society, International Humanitarian City (Emirates), International Medical Corps (United States of America), International Islamic Charitable Organization (Kuwait), Humanitarian Relief Foundation (IHH Turkey), Start Network (Britain), and International Council of Voluntary Agencies (ICVA in Switzerland).

The workshop was held for the preparation of the Conference of Humanitarian Crisis in Yemen: Challenges and Prospects of the Humanitarian Response. The initiators met for consultation, coordination and cooperation so as to face the deteriorating situation of the Yemenis and their increasing sufferings.

Aiding Socotra

Megh and Chapala cyclones hit Socotra Island and a number of coast cities in the south of Yemen. QC was the first humanitarian society to reach the cyclone-affected people there. So far, QC has implemented 2 relief projects to aid those people; the first project was implemented for the Chapala-affected in Socotra Island, Hadramawt, Al Mahrah, and Shabwah from which 500 families benefited. The other project was for the Megh-affected from which 9,150 people benefited. The aids it offered included food baskets, blankets, mattresses, kitchen tools (for each family), and cooked meals for those whose houses were destroyed.

Following a call by international organizations that raised the alarm, Qatar Charity has begun finalizing a campaign to combat the cholera epidemic in Yemen. The campaign is expected to benefit 40,000 people.

It will focus on providing drinkable water in the areas most in need, in order to prevent people from using polluted water that results in the infection, and to support health centers to offer treatment and medicine for the affected people, especially as most health centers have been affected by the Yemeni crisis.

Imminent danger

Mr. Mohammed Al Kaabi, Director of Qatar Charity’s Relief Department, said, "QC has followed the Yemeni crisis since its beginning and has launched Emergency Relief Campaigns and Projects in various regions. However, the magnitude of the current crisis is great and our brothers are in danger. International organizations have launched repeated appeals to accelerate the fight against the spreading cholera epidemic in Yemen, which prompted us to launch this campaign, which we hope will benefit 40,000 people.”

Moreover, he appealed to the generous donors to respond quickly to support the campaign, pointing out that every passing day the suffering increases and many lives may unfortunately be lost while they could have been saved if the necessary support had been available.

It is noteworthy that, through certain stocks, benefactors in Qatar are urged to donate for the benefit of their affected brothers in Yemen. The stocks are: “Water supply” which is worth 100 QR, the "food basket" which is worth 300 QR, and "medical services" with a worth of QR 500. Urgent humanitarian appeal

The United Nations has announced that an estimated 7.6 million people are living in areas vulnerable to the transmission of cholera in Yemen. The UN also mentioned the inadequate sanitation and assured that all displacement places and shelters are at risk of transmission of the disease. Besides, Red Cross stressed that 180 people have died of the disease since late April, and the situation requires immediate intervention from international and regional organizations to reduce the risk of the spread of cholera in Yemen.

According to NGOs ranking and Financial Tracking Service (FTS) report issued by OCHA, QC has ranked first for several years in providing relief and emergency humanitarian assistance to different people and countries, particularly the Syrian, Palestinian and Somali people.

The number of beneficiaries of relief projects during the Syrian crisis reached about 9 million displaced people and refugees, where 5.3 million people benefited from QC’s relief last, at a cost of QR 180 million.

Due to the crises increase and high rates of displacement, the number of Relief Projects implemented by QC has increased in the recent years in different countries. QCs’ activities and projects targeted various developmental and humanitarian sectors including education, health, water, sanitation, social welfare, cultural development, economic empowerment and social housing.

The Volume of Relief Aid

In 2016, QC’s relief aid reached its peak, benefiting more than 5.3 million people affected by war, disaster and crisis in Syria, Yemen, Iraq, Palestine, Jordan, Somalia, Pakistan, Myanmar, Sudan, Sri Lanka, Albania, Djibouti, Haiti, Kenya, Niger, Indonesia, Africa and Nepal.

Relief sector

The relief aids covered different sectors and areas including providing accommodation, non-food items, food, health, education, water and sanitation services, with an estimated cost of more than QR 188 million.

Accommodation sector

In the field of accommodation and non-food items, the cost of implemented projects in 2016 amounted to more than QR 81 million, benefiting more than 700 thousand affected people, while the cost of food projects amounted to more than QR 50 million, benefiting more than 2.7 million people. Health aid projects benefited more than 360 thousand affected at a cost of 4.7 QR million.

Education field

In the field of education, the cost of implement QC aid projects amounted to more than QR 9 million, benefiting more than 80 thousand students, while the total expenditure on Water and Sanitation Projects amounted to more than QR 5 million, benefiting about 600 thousand people.

The big share

Due to the escalation of the Syrian crisis and increase of displacement rates in 2016, the Syrian people received the largest share of relief aid, with a cost of QR 150 million, benefiting more than 3.8 million people.

Yemen comes after Syria in terms of implemented relief projects volume. In 2016, QC implemented relief projects in Yemen with a cost of more than QR 16.5 million, benefiting more than 850 thousand affected people, while in Iraq the QC’s aid projects cost amounted to QR 5.7, benefiting more than 145 thousand people. In Palestine, the cost of implemented aid projects by QC amounted to more than QR 3 million benefiting 91 thousand people. In Somalia, more than 176 thousand people benefited from the aid projects at a cost of QR 3 million.

It is noteworthy to mention that the number of QC projects beneficiaries in Syria since the beginning of the crisis in April 2011 until March 2017 reached more than 8.814.336 displaced people and refugees, of whom 6.700.000 beneficiaries inside Syria and 2.114.336 beneficiaries outside Syria.

Food, health, education and accommodation sectors were top priority for Syrians because of their importance and necessity to build a new generation contributes to the building of Syria in the future.
