HE Sheikh Thani bin Hamad inaugurates "Rofaka" City for orphans in Sudan

Marking fulfilling building the city, HE Sheikh Thani bin Hamad Al-Thani handed over Aisha Bint Hamad bin Abdullah Al-Attiyah School for orphans in Ad-Damir city (287 km north of Khartoum, the capital of Sudan) to Hatim Al-Waseela Al-Samani, Governor of Nile River State. It occurred in a ceremony held at the headquarters of the project in the presence of Major General Abd al- Rahman Sadiq al-Mahdi, assistant to the President of the Republic, a crowd of federal ministers and ministers of the Nile River state.

The ceremony was attended by Sheikh Hamad Bin Nasser Al Thani, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Qatar Charity and Faisal bin Abdullah Al Mahmoud, Member of the Board of Directors, as well as a group of administrators at the head office in Doha and Khartoum branch.

200 families who benefited from the project received the keys of their homes. His Excellency Sheikh Thani Bin Hamad Al-Thani also opened Abū Bakr aṣ-Ṣiddīq Mosque, which can accommodate 800 worshipers. In addition, he toured the city, visiting the exhibition which covered all stages of the city's implementation.

Moreover, HE Sheikh Thani bin Hamad bin Khalifa received the honorary doctorate awarded by the Nile Valley University to HH Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani. It declared, "On April 19, the Council of Professors of the Nile Valley University issued a decree granting His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani an honorary doctorate in political science."

Hatim Al-Waseela Al-Samani, Governor of Nile River State, expressed his deep thanks to the Government and people of Qatar for their ongoing support for their brothers in Sudan and welcomed, on behalf of the Sudanese leadership, their guest Sheikh Thani Bin Hamad Al-Thani and the accompanying delegation.

Al-Waseelah also mentioned the developmental projects that the Government of Qatar and its Charitable Organizations have contributed to, including the Abu Hamad City Electricity Project, as well as contributing to solving the Darfur problem through holding a dialogue under Qatari mediation that helped to develop the Region. Additionally, there were national efforts exerted to preserve the Sudanese’s heritage and identity such as the projects of restoration of monuments in Gebel Barkal, Musawwarat es-Sufra and Bagrawiyah pyramids.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of "Rofaka’" (companions) city, Sudan Minister of Welfare and Social Security, Mashair Al-Dawalab, expressed her appreciation of what the State of Qatar carries out in Sudan to offer assistance in the fields of health, education and orphans sponsorship. She also praised Qatar's charitable efforts and hoped that other voluntary organizations would follow suit in Sudan and the Arab world.

For her part, Mrs. Intisar Mohammed Ali, Minister of Social Affairs and Guidance in the Nile State, explained the Government of Sudan's policy to support and Sponsor Orphans and provide them with care and compensation for the loss of their parents.

Yusuf bin Ahmed Al Kuwari, Executive Director of Qatar Charity, praised the cooperation given by Government of Sudan and he talked about orphans sponsorship as one of the strategic themes of QC, which guarantees more than 100,000 orphans in more than 33 countries.

He pointed out that "Rofaka’" (companions) city provides job opportunities for more than 300 people, and education for about 2000 students as well as vocational education. The ceremony included a poem praising His Highness Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, delivered by Dr. Hashim Al-Bashir, former Dean of the Faculty of Education at Nile Valley University. The ceremony concluded with signing a cooperation agreement between Qatar Charity, the Nile River State of Sudan and "Rofaka’" (companions) city.

The orphanage, which was built at a cost of 32 million QR, comprises of 200 housing units (for widowed mothers and their orphans), a kindergarten for pre-school children, two primary schools: one for boys and one for girls, and similarly two secondary schools, a medical clinic, a mosque with a capacity of 800 worshipers, a commercial market, two water stations, children's playgrounds and green yards, as well as public services in the village including public sanitation for the entire village, and an administrative office for the compound.
