  • QC prioritizes drilling wells in remote areas to benefit thousands of people suffering from shortage of potable water.

With the support of the people of Qatar, QC has implemented a new project of drilling an artesian well equipped with solar energy to benefit 6000 people living in Hodh El Gharbi, a region in southern Mauritania. The artesian well equipped with solar-powered pumps was drilled in Kotwal Village located in Tintane, which is 700 km away from the capital, Nouakchott.

Priority to remote areas

Mr. Idris Al-Sahel, Director of QC office in Nouakchott, said that this well is currently benefiting about 6000 people living in Katoyl village and the near areas who were in a desperate need to drinking water, stressing that QC gives priority to these areas due to lack of organizations who provide services and facilities in such regions.

The artesian well was equipped with a water tower built of reinforced concrete with a capacity of 15 cubic meters. A floating pump was installed and prepared to fit the well water level to prevent pump damage.

The well was also equipped with solar power system consisting of 10 solar panels with a capacity of WC200 and other necessary requirements including wires and cables. A Reinforced concrete water tank with a capacity of 6 cubic meters (dimensions  2x3 m2) was built for watering livestock . It was connected to the water tower with a 90 mm underground water pipe . It wa s also connected to a three-outlet water tap opposite to the livestock tank, a meter and a water valve to provide drinking water to people and to control the flow of water 300 m away from the tank.  This is in addition to installing a fence fixed to reinforced concrete columns to protect the solar system.

Building other wells

Qatar Charity (International Charity Organization) has also carried out previous projects included building an artesian well in Katawan villiage (Hodh Ech Chargui Region) equipped with a large water tank and a solar-powered pump to serve about 4000 people.

QC has also begun drilling another artesian well at Em Lehiad Municipality in Hodh El Gharbi Region and it will be equipped with a solar-powered pump and a large water tank to serve 4,000 people. The total cost of these two wells is approximately QR 600,000.

QC Office in Mauritania completed drilling and equipping five groundwater wells in Nouakchott, at a cost of QR 225,000.  Thousands of people will take advantage of these wells particularly those who live in the villages of Satol, Amoura and Takvit in Tararzh Region, in addition to the villages of Dobounka and Abonde at Brakna Region.

All these groundwater wells were provided with reinforced concrete tanks and covers. Boundary walls protecting the wells were built seven meters away from the wells. Each well is connected to water drainage tubes, size 63 to drain the unsafe water away from the well. The internal diameter of the well is 1.4 meters, while the outer one is 0.7 meters high, with a thickness of 0.45 meters for each well.
